There are often reports in the media about businesses that have fallen victim to security breaches, due to the lack of proper security measures. Implementing the basics, in terms of security procedures, is vital for the successful operation of any business.
Gone are the days when you only needed locks and chains to secure your commercial property. An office or building needs more than just the norm to deter criminal elements from taking precedence.
Thieves will use any opportunity to gain entry to your property. The sad thing is, not all thieves are outsiders—unscrupulous persons can be found within your organization.
Check for any weaknesses and faults in your current security systems, and take notice of these tips to see if you already have them in place.

Warning Signs
Do you have warning signs in and around the building? Placing warning signs at the entrance and at various points within a building will inform potential thieves of your security measures and deter them from entering.
For example; if you use security cameras, having a sign that advertises that your premises are under 24 hour video surveillance, is a smart way to deter thieves from entering.

Push Pads/ Panic Bars
A panic bar is a mechanism used to unlatch a door. It consists of a spring metal bar that is fixed horizontally to the inside of a door that opens on the outside. The sole purpose of a panic bar is to function as an emergency exit door, which cannot be opened from the outside.
This is also very good for back doors and side exits, as it gives more controls over who can enter the building. A good locksmith can easily install these.

Fire Doors/ Emergency Exits
Did you know that in accordance with OSHA standards, companies with ten or more employees are required to have an emergency action plan for employees?
A fire door acts both as a safety and security tool. It is designed to contain a fire to a single section of a building, thus reducing the risk of smoke and fire to those occupying neighboring compartments. When installed properly, a fire door can protect your place from the effects of a fire, and serve for security purposes as well.
As for exits, a workplace must have at least two exit routes. Depending on the number of employees, the employer should properly install sufficient exit doors to be used in emergency cases, such as a fire. These doors must also be free of obstruction.

Fire Drills
Fire drills are vital when it comes to workplace safety and security. Although it’s not on OSHA’s list of requirements, it’s highly recommended. All commercial facilities must have a clear exit route, to ensure everyone can exit when a fire starts.
Fire drills help employees become aware of the emergency steps to take in the event of a crisis. These drills not only serve the purpose of a fire, but prepare employees to handle other hazards.
All in all, one important aspect of maintaining a productive workplace is ensuring that there are effective security and safety measures in place. Review your security procedures to make certain that all areas are properly secure and given the right attention.
